When I come across an image of a wedding dress, I stop scrolling on Instagram. A beautiful woman in a white dress standing by a lake at dusk or in the light and shadow of a stone cloister.
I just long for the difference in climate.
Suddenly, I wondered where the term June Bride came from. An internet search turned up a number of theories related to European mythology and religion. The Japanese bridal industry has taken advantage of this. ...... I was disappointed to find that it is like chocolate on Valentine's Day. However, I came across a description of where in Europe June is a beautiful time of year with lush greenery and blooming flowers. From there, my thoughts jumped to Hokkaido, which I heard has no rainy season.
The absence of a dreary, dank period is wonderful, but I can't stand the cold of winter.
At the same latitude as Hokkaido are France and Austria, and in North America, the Great Lakes region.
There is no such thing in this world as a comfortable, year-round place to live. When something is good, something is bad, and we have no choice but to endure it.
I sighed a lot and thought about
a land that exists nowhere, a beautiful woman that exists nowhere,
and a great long story by an English writer who was killed in the First World War.

ウェディングドレスの画像に出合うと、インスタグラムのスクロールが止まる。暮れなずむ湖畔や、石造りの回廊の光と影の中に佇む白いドレスの美しい女性。
風土の違いにただ憧れる。
ふと、ジューンブライドなる語の謂れは、どこにあるのかと想う。ネット検索で上がってくるのは、ヨーロッパの神話がらみ、宗教がらみの諸説。日本のブライダル産業がそれを利用した……。バレンタインデーのチョコレートのようなものかという失望感。しかし、ヨーロッパのどのあたりをさしているのか、６月は緑豊かで、花の咲き誇る美しい時期であるとの記述に出合った。そこから梅雨がないと聞く北海道へ思いが飛んだ。
鬱陶しい、じめじめした期間がないというのは素晴らしいことだが、私には冬の寒さが耐えられない。
北海道と同緯度にあるのがフランスやオーストリア、北米なら五大湖の辺り。
一年を通じて心地よく住みやすい土地など、この世には存在しない。何かが良ければ何かは悪く、その時期は我慢して耐える他ない。
一頻り溜息をして、
どこにもない土地と、どこにも存在しない美しい女性、
そして、第一次世界大戦で戦死した或るイギリス作家の大長編を想った。
