My father, who died 20 years ago, had a period when he was into lace knitting. This was when I was still in primary school.
He used to knit them in his spare time while he was on voyage and brought them back home as souvenirs when he went on holiday. The biggest one was a cover for his daughter's upright piano. It was tight and hard and looked like a fishing net. I used to wonder how much time he spent on it. But when my father got drunk and in a bad mood, he would tear off the lace he had woven. Piano covers, table centres and everything else he knitted.
After lace knitting, his hobby shifted to yarn knitting, but both pullovers and cardigans were still destined to be torn off.
Looking at Instagram, old lace dresses catch my eye. Many are white. Some yellowish ones, perhaps due to age, are also beautiful.
Most white lace dresses are wedding dresses. Usually, you may or may not see one once in your lifetime. Other white lace is used for women's lingerie. I also learnt that there is a type of lace called eyelash lace.
It is so delicate to look at that I want to hold it in my hands and touch it, not just look at the image. It is a different kind of white lace from the stiff ones that my father used to make.
The white negligee in this image was brought by this beautiful person for the photo shoot. I only looked at it through the camera.
20年前に亡くなった父は、レース編みに凝っていた時期があった。私が未だ小学生のころだった。
航海中の空き時間を使って編み上げたものを休暇になると土産として持ち帰った。一番大きなものは、娘のアップライトピアノのカバー。目が詰んでいて固く漁網のようだった。どれだけの時間を費やしたのかと思ったものだ。しかし、父は酔って機嫌が悪くなると、自分が編んだレースを引きちぎってしまう。ピアノカバーもテーブルセンターも。
レース編みの次は毛糸の編み物に趣味は移ったが、セーターもカーディガンも、やはり引きちぎられる運命だった。
インスタグラムを眺めていて、古いレースのドレスに目が留まる。多くは白。経年によるのか黄なりのものも美しい。
白いレースのドレスの殆どはウエディングドレスだ。普通は一生の内に一度目にするかどうか。それ以外の白いレースは女性のランジェリーになる。アイラッシュレースというものがあるのも知った。
見るからに繊細で、画像を眺めるだけではなく、手に取って触れてみたくなる。父が作っていたようなごわごわしたものとは別のしろもの。
この画像の白いネグリジェは、撮影用として、この美しい人が持参された。私はカメラ越しに眺めただけだ。
