Looking at the life-size dolls reminds me of a hotel room where I checked in alone.
The cool tranquillity of a well-arranged room.
I turn down the brightness of the room light and walk around the room for a while, using only the light from the window with the curtains slightly open.
Check-in time at all hotels is from 3pm. To spend the morning in peace and quiet, one has to stay more than one night in a row.
My favourite hotel is at the end of the harbour jetty, and if the room faces south, the only thing beyond the veranda is the sea. I dream of spending the whole morning gazing out over the sea below and beyond the horizon.
I look at the dolls, holding on to the illusion that I am not going anywhere, but only spending time in my hotel room.
I am cooped up in the house, the light is very little.
I comb her hair and adjust her outfit.
The doll remains in the same position forever, but her expression changes subtly.
I am drawn to the tranquillity of the empty, freshly checked-in hotel room.
等身大の人形を眺めていると、一人でチェックインしたホテルの部屋を想起する。
整えられた部屋の、ひんやりとした静謐さ。
室内灯の明るさを絞り、少しだけカーテンを開いた窓の明かりだけで、室内を暫く歩いてみる。
どのホテルもチェックインの時間は午後３時から。午前中を静かに過ごすためには、連泊以上しなければならない。
私の好きなホテルは、港の突堤の先にあり、南向きの部屋なら、ベランダの向こうは海ばかり。眼下の海を眺め、水平線の彼方まで、午前中一杯ぼんやり眺めて過ごすことを夢見る。
どこへも行かずに、ホテルの部屋の中だけで過ごしているという幻を抱きながら、人形を眺めている。
家の中に籠り、明かりは僅か。
髪を梳いてやり、衣装を整えてやる。
人形は、いつまでも同じ姿勢のままだが、表情は微妙に変化する。
誰もいない、チェックインしたばかりのホテルの部屋の静謐さに惹かれる。
